John 20:22
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
Genesis 2:7
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
John 20:22 parallels the event in Genesis 2:7, where God breathed life into Adam, giving him physical life. In John 20:22, Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit into His disciples, giving them spiritual life and a new beginning as it is written that the first man Adam was made a living soul while the last Adam was made a quickening spirit, other versions render it as life giving spirit.
(1 Corinthians 15:45 niv
So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.)
He has given us this life and so we give it to others through Him.
This connection highlights the idea of restoration and redemption. Just as God breathed life into Adam, Jesus breathes new life into His disciples, restoring the relationship and authority that was lost in the Fall. This act symbolizes the new creation redeemed from fallen nature through Christ by the Holy Spirit, here we our empowerment as believers to live the life of God here on earth.
1 Corinthians 15:50
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
Since the body was corrupted by sin, God sought to restore us to Himself through Christ by whom we have the Holy Spirit, a new life imparted unto us as scripture says: The body is “sown” in corruption; it is raised beyond the reach of corruption, it is “sown” in dishonour; it is raised in splendour, It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power, It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. As there is a natural body so will there be a spiritual body…
He has given us a resurrected life through Christ Jesus, the old is gone and the new is come.
2 Corinthians 3:18
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
God intends to have creation that is renewed with renewed bodies, souls in a renewed world. For this reason, the world has to come to an end to establish fully a new creation. We are progressively being transformed in to that perfect creation so that what is decaying and growing old is ready to vanish.
Hebrews 8:13
By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.
“God is a God of new: In Isaiah, He declares, ‘Behold, I am doing something new’ (Isaiah 43:19). Again, in Revelation, He says, ‘Behold, I am making all things new’ (Revelation 21:5). Moreover, He asserts that He has given us a new heart and spirit (Ezekiel 36:26-27). A heart longing after spiritual things, being born again not of flesh but of the spirit , being made as one new man in Christ : He created in himself one new man ( Ephesians 2:15) re-created in true righteousness and true holiness ( Ephesians 4:20-24).
John 3:7
“Don’t be surprised when I tell you that you must be born again.
Being born anew is a transformative regeneration of yourself, a profound change that may be invisible to the eye, just like the wind. But just as the wind brings new life to the world around us, the Holy Spirit renews and revitalizes you, imparting divine nature and life through a supernatural work. This rebirth is not something you can see, but its effects will be evident in your life as you embrace this gift of new life in Christ.”
2 Peter 1:3-4
³According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: ⁴ Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
The breathing of the Holy Spirit also represents the impartation of divine life, wisdom, and power, enabling believers to fulfill their purpose and mission. It’s a beautiful representation of God’s desire to reconnect with humanity and restore us to our original purpose and potential.
Prophetic Utterance:
I am a re-created being, a clean heart has He given unto to me and a renewed spirit. In him I live and move and have my being, daily I am being transformed more into His image.
Halleluya.
