The Oxford dictionary describes disobedience as the act of failing or refusing to obey.
There is a cost for every thing that we do, the Bible says that you reap what you sow. Therefore for every act of disobedience be sure that there is a cost.
1 Samuel 15:22
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
God Himself chose Saul to be the King of Israel since they (Israelites) wanted to be like other nations and have a king rule over them instead of God. But just because you have been chosen or handpicked by God doesn’t mean when you disobey Him He will not deal with you.
Message translation explains it better “Not doing what God tells you is far worse than fooling around in the occult. Getting self-important around God is far worse than making deals with your dead ancestors.”
God instructed Saul to kill all the Amalekites both animals and people but he chose to spare the best looking cattle and Agag the King of Amalek. Saul also decided to walk in another man’s purpose (1 Samuel 13:12) thus disobeying God and hence having God reject him and stripping the kingdom away from him.
Exodus 4:24
And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him.
Shortly before this verse, the Lord appears to Moses and tells him that He has chosen him to go deliver His people the Israelites.
What an honor to be singlehandedly picked out by God. A God who has shown you a few miracles and shared with you His grand plan. How exciting this experience must have been!
However this God that has chosen you and revealed His plans to you is the same God seeking to kill you because you disobeyed and neglected His commandment of circumcising his son.
Numbers 20:12
And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
The same Moses was denied entrance into the promised land because of disobedience. He was instructed to speak to a rock for water but Moses struck the rock instead.
Leviticus 10:1
¹And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.²And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.
God separated the Levite’s to serve Him but He also consecrated Aaron and His sons to serve Him forever. God could have appointed anyone from the Levite tribe but He chose Aaron and his sons.
God is no respectar of persons, even if He announced you for the whole world to see and you suddenly disobeyed, He will deal with you just like He did with Aaron’s sons who offered a strange fire and were killed instantly
1 Kings 13:21-22
²¹And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
²²But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.
After the young prophet delivered God’s word against the altar in Bethel, he was swayed from his path by the old prophet in the land causing the young prophet to go against the instruction God had given him and he responded to the word of the old prophet thereby God’s judgment came to him and he was killed on his way back home. Child of God,If God has instructed you to do something and you are really sure it is God, even if an angel comes and tries to change your course of action, please stick to the word of God.
